Stand-by generators to reduce water disruptions

The Water Authority of Fiji is in the process of acquiring stand-by generators to ensure that there is no repeat of the huge water disruptions to majority of the Suva area earlier this week.

Team leader Corporate communications Michelle Tevita Singh said this as the power blackout at the Savura Pumping Station on Monday saw people living in areas along Princess Road, Mead Road, Bay View Heights, Nabua Road, Samabula North areas and areas like Lami, Veisari and Togalevu without water supply until late in the evening.

Singh said tenders for the generators were called for last month and the final word rests with their Board.

She added that these generators which will cost over $2 million.

Meanwhile, the Authority said that the power cut was not due to excavation works done by them.

Singh said that though they did excavation for piping works at Savura last week on Wednesday, the blackout occurred the following Monday, four days after the excavation so the Authority could not be held responsible for the black out.
