The Digicel Fiji Sevens team will meet South Africa in the main cup quarterfinal of the New Zealand Sevens at 2.39 this afternoon after winning their last pool game against Wales 19-0 last night.
After the upset defeat to Tonga 17-14, Assistant coach Etuate Waqa made some crucial changes to his starting line-up where he brought in the likes of Nemani Nagusa, Lepani Botea and moved Setefano Cakau to rover with Osea Kolinisau to the wing.
In the first half Fiji led 12-0 with tries to Nemani Nagusa and Osea Kolinisau.
Waisea Nayacalevu increased Fiji’s tally to 19-0 at the end of the second half.
Kolinisau said after the win the players had to step up against Wales knowing they have to beat them to be in the quarterfinal.
He added the new players are now adapting to what is in the coach’s game plan.
Fiji’s quarterfinal opponents, South African coach Paul Treu said that in Wellington it does not matter who they will face as they are in New Zealand to win.
In last night’s results, Fiji beat Wales 19-0, South Africa edged England 14-10, Australia and France drew 10-10 while in the last pool game of day one, host’s and defending champions, New Zealand beat Samoa 19-7.
The cup quarter-finals starts at 1.33pm with New Zealand playing France at 1.55pm England will meet Tonga, Canada faces Samoa at 2.17pm while the South Africa and Fiji game is at 2.39pm.
The cup semifinal starts at 5.35pm.
The cup final will be played at 8.30pm.
