State-owned enterprise board appointments should be based on merit, not political influence, as their decisions affect Fiji's economy.

This was raised by Jimilai Baledrokadroka during his submission at the Constitution Review consultation at the Matavolivoli Hall in Nadi.
He says political influence should be removed from the appointment process for board members of state-owned enterprises and statutory bodies.
Baledrokadroka highlighted that organisations such as Fiji Airports, Fiji Airways and other government-linked entities play a critical role in the country's economy, and decisions made by their boards can have far-reaching impacts.
He says too often, people appointed to these boards are politically nominated or recommended rather than selected based on their qualifications and expertise.

He says such a commission should be provided for in the Constitution to ensure transparency and accountability in the appointment process.
Baledrokadroka stresses that those serving on boards should be well-versed in the relevant sectors and possess the professional qualifications needed to make sound decisions.

Chairman of the Ba Provincial Council, Ratu Meli Tora, raised concerns about the timeline of the constitutional review process and its possible impact on the next General Election.
Drawing from past experience, Ratu Meli says constitutional consultations and reforms can take time.
He questions whether the election could be delayed if the review process is not completed before the country is due to go to the polls.
He also asks whether there is a contingency plan in place, noting that municipal elections are yet to be held.

Responding to the concerns, Constitution Review Commission Chairperson Sevuloni Valenitabua says the Commissioners have been given six months to complete their work and their contracts expire on August 31st.
He explains that once the Commission submits its report, decisions on its recommendations, including implementation and timelines, will be made by the Government.
