Kolinisau urges stronger defence as Fiji chase SVNS series title

Kolinisau urges stronger defence as Fiji chase SVNS series title

Fiji Airways Men's National 7s coach Osea Kolinisau believes that the only way they can win the World Sevens Series is to claim the HSBC SVNS New York 7s or finish above the Blitzboks.

Speaking to fijivillage News from New York, Kolinisau says this has been something they have been talking about since they did not play to their usual standards last week.

He says they were not in control defensively as the boys were trying to make big shots and over-chasing.

He adds that this week they have focused heavily on tightening their defence and improving communication because he believes discipline and structure will be key.

Fiji and South Africa are in a tight race for the World Sevens Series title as they are both tied on 86 points.

The Blitzboks surged back into contention after winning tournaments in Cape Town, Perth and Vancouver, carrying strong momentum into this weekend.

However, Fiji remain the only team this season to finish in the top positions at every leg of the series.

The side claimed gold in Singapore, along with a silver in Perth and bronze medals in Dubai, Cape Town and Vancouver, keeping them firmly in contention for the overall title as the series enters its final stages.

Fiji will open their New York 7s campaign against Argentina at 2am tomorrow, followed by Great Britain at 4:56am and Spain at 8:14am.

The Cup semi-finals will begin at 4:28am Monday, while the Cup final is scheduled for 8:41am.
