Lyles sets up shot at Olympic sprint double in 200m

American sprinter Noah Lyles has the chance to become the first man since Usain Bolt to complete an Olympic sprint double after qualifying for the 200-metres final in Paris 2024.

Lyles won gold in the 100 metres sprint by five-thousandths of a second from Jamaica's Kishane Thompson in a dramatic photo finish on Monday.

The 27-year-old, winner of three golds at last year's World Championships, finished second in his 200-metre semi-final in a time of 20.08 seconds to Botswana's Letsile Tebogo.

World 100 metres silver and 200 metres bronze medallist Tebogo set the fastest time of the round, clocking 19.96 seconds.

The 200-metre World record is held by Jamaican sprinter Usain Bolt with a time of 19.19 seconds set in Berlin, Germany in 2009.

The men's 200-metres final will be held at 6.30am tomorrow.

Lyles is also part of the USA men’s 4x100 metres relay team that will participate in the men’s 4x100 metres relay heats at 9.35 tonight.

The women's 4x100 metres heats will start at 9.10 tonight.

The women’s final will be at 5.30am Saturday while the men’s final will be at 5.47am on the same day.

Meanwhile, the US continues to lead the overall Olympics medal tally with 27 gold, 35 silver and 32 bronze, China is second with 25 gold, 23 silver and 17 bronze, while Australia is third with 18 gold, 12 silver and 11 bronze.
