A teacher in Nausori is calling on the government to bring back the repeat policy for students because there have been a lot of freebies given by the government to children these days, which has led to these children caring less about their school work, and parents neglecting their parental responsibility.

The teacher, who refused to be named, made this submission during the Education Act 1966 consultation that was held at the Nausori Parish Hall.

The teacher says if the Minister of Education is so focused on academic excellence, then the year 6 examination should be brought back because only the children will realise that they need to study and parents know they have a responsibility towards their children.

She says this automatic progression is not helping at all in terms of educating children.

The teacher says there is a need for children to repeat so that parents know they have a duty towards their children if their children are not doing well.

She is also urging parents to stop blaming the teachers for their children’s poor performance because sometimes, children do not listen to the teachers in school.

The teacher says parents should work together with the teachers by teaching their children at home how to respect the teachers because teachers can only teach better if they are being given due respect by the students.
