The Auckland Blues handed the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua their first home defeat of 2023 with a 30-14 win at Churchill Park in their Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific culture round clash this afternoon.

The Blues started the game well taking a 13-0 lead in the first 30 minutes before the Drua closed the gap in the 33rd minute of the game through a try to number 8 Elia Canakaivata.

The Blues headed into half time with a 20-7 lead.

Discipline let the Drua down in the second spell as the Blues capitalized on it to score a further 10 points before Canakaivata dived over for his second try in the corner and replacement fly-half Kemu Valetini converting the try for a 30-14 lead to the Blues.

The Drua tried to fight back in the last 7 minutes of the game but the Blues stood their ground in defence and held on to win.

Fijian Drua captain Tevita Ikanivere says today’s game was a learning curve for them.

He says they will go back to the drawing board next week and try to observe and iron out the mistakes they committed today before they take on the Hurricanes at the HFC Bank Stadium.
