Waqanika pleads not guilty to FICAC charge

Waqanika pleads not guilty to FICAC charge
Prominent lawyer Tanya Waqanika has pleaded not guilty to a charge by FICAC in relation to a facebook post on April 19th last year.

She appeared before Magistrate Yogesh Prasad this morning.

The charge is brought under Section 14(7) of the Political Parties (Registration, Conduct, Funding and Disclosures) Act 2013.

Waqanika is charged by FICAC for allegedly breaching Section 14 of the Political Parties Act.

It is alleged that on or about 19 April 2024, while serving as a public officer, namely a Board Member of Investment Fiji and Telecom Fiji Limited, Waqanika publicly indicated opposition to the political party SODELPA.

Her counsel Samuela Savu informed that court that a stay application has been made in this case and a ruling is expected to be delivered on May 6th or before.

FICAC counsel Joseph Work said that the application has no bearing on the matter before the Magistrates Court and it should proceed as normal.

The matter has been adjourned to May 27th for a pre-trial conference.
