An effort is being made to raise women’s participation in the economy by raising labour force participation from 32 percent to 60 percent by 2030 where the Women’s Economic Empowerment National Action Plan aligns with Fiji’s National Development Plan (2025–2029) and Vision 2050.
While speaking during the a Fiji Women’s Economic Empowerment National Action Plan event, Minister for Women, Sashi Kiran says they aim to also boost women-owned MSMEs from 19 percent to 50 percent by 2029, and expanding women’s leadership roles across all levels of decision-making.
Kiran says the plan is built on four pillars; women at work – improving job opportunities, protections, leadership, and skills training, women in business – removing barriers for entrepreneurs, with better access to finance, markets, and support, women’s financial inclusion – expanding access to banking, credit, insurance, and digital tools, alongside financial and digital literacy and women's health and well-being – ensuring safety, health, and freedom from violence as a foundation for empowerment. She says the plan reflects consultations with women and stakeholders across Fiji and is supported by local and international partners, including civil society groups and the government of Australia.
She adds it emphasizes inclusivity, equity, and accountability, aiming to ensure no woman is left behind.
The Minister adds that when women succeed, families, communities, and the nation as a whole become stronger and more resilient.
