The Post Fiji Pte Limited today achieved another milestone as they opened the new Universal Postal Union (UPU) regional office at the Post Fiji Headquarters in Suva.

While officiating at the inauguration, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications Manoa Kamikamica says hosting the new regional office will enhance the Universal Postal Union’s ability to provide member countries in the Pacific Region with technical assistance for the development and modernisation of their postal services.

Kamikamica says this is a historical event for the postal sector in Fiji and the Pacific region and what better place for the UPU office to be based in than the Post Fiji Limited’s headquarters.

He says given the challenges that the postal sector is facing, they are grateful that the Universal Postal Union decided to open its office in Fiji and ensure that the Pacific postal sector is not left behind

He says the global postal sector continues to face tough challenges such as digitalisation competition, evolving consumer demands, continuing-decline in letter volumes so it is therefore critical that postal operators continue to redefine their business operations.

He says and that we are equipped with necessary financial and technical support to develop relevant technologies and business opportunities and remain innovative, so that ever-changing consumer expectation continues to be met.

He adds undoubtedly, this new regional office will promote the principle of regionalism and strengthen Fiji’s relationship with other Pacific island postal operators.

UPU's Director General, Masahiko Metoki says the post is an essential pillar for the social economic development of any country.

Metoki says without a doubt this inauguration it is part of future growth strategies throughout the Pacific.

He adds the main purpose of this new hub is to help operators enhance infrastructures deep in collaboration among industrial stakeholders and growing wider development of the region especially in small and developing countries.

The new office will oversee the postal operations not only in Fiji but eight other neighboring Pacific Island countries such as Kiribati, Nauru, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tonga, Tuvalu and Vanuatu.
