A law lecturer at the University of Fiji says the values of unity, respect and discipline strongly promoted by Ratu Sir Lala Sukuna are slowly disappearing from today’s society..
While speaking during Ratu Sukuna Day celebrations, lecturer Sanjana Datt says Ratu Sukuna remains one of the most influential figures in Fiji’s history, particularly through his contributions to Fiji’s land and legal systems.
Datt says his work helped establish the land tenure system and guided how iTaukei land could be securely managed and leased for the benefit of all communities and the national economy.
She says Ratu Sukuna’s contributions are still reflected in Fiji’s legal frameworks today, especially in property and governance law.
Datt says as a non-iTaukei, she finds Ratu Sukuna’s life inspiring because of the sacrifices he made and the lasting legacy he left behind for all Fijians.
While reflecting on today’s society, Datt says many of the customs and values that existed in the past are gradually fading away.

She believes one of the main reasons is the lack of strong family foundations at home, where parents are no longer spending enough time guiding and teaching children important values.
Datt also highlighted the growing impact of technology and social media, saying many families no longer spend quality time together as they once did.
She says issues such as drug use, lack of unity and racial disharmony show the importance of returning to the principles Ratu Sukuna stood for.
According to Datt, Ratu Sukuna strongly advocated unity among all races and encouraged people to work together for the prosperity of Fiji.
She believes if Ratu Sukuna were alive today, Fiji would have reached even greater levels of economic and social development.
