The Hurricanes are crossing their fingers star playmaker Ruben Love won’t miss a significant amount of playing time.
Love sustained an ankle injury during training in Palmerston North this week, the Hurricanes said in a statement on Saturday.
“He will undergo further assessment early next week to determine the extent of the injury.”
The Hurricanes have a first round bye, before kicking off their Super Rugby Pacific campaign against Moana Pasifika in the capital on Friday night.
Love was expected to be a key player in the No 10 jersey this season.
The New Zealand teams are already carrying a stack of injuries, with the Blues, Crusaders and Highlanders all having seven players out for round one.
The Chiefs are without five players for Saturday night’s game against the Blues in Auckland, including All Blacks hooker Brodie McAlister.
Damian McKenzie is missing in action while on paternity leave.
The Queensland Reds had a whopping 11 players ruled out through injury ahead of their heavy defeat to the Waratahs in Sydney on Friday night, including Tate McDermott and Harry Wilson.
