Marist Brothers High School and Suva Grammar School are currently leading the boys’ and girls’ medal tallies at the end of day one of the Coca-Cola Games Suva Zone 2.
In the boys’ division, Marist is leading with 17 gold, 13 silver and 9 bronze medals.
Grammar is second with 8 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze, while Lomary Secondary School is third with 2 gold and 1 bronze medal.
In the girls’ division, Grammar leads with 14 gold, 10 silver and 13 bronze medals.
In second place, Saint Joseph’s Secondary School has 9 gold, 10 silver and 6 bronze, while Lomary Secondary School is third with 2 gold, 5 silver and 2 bronze medals.
In the senior boys’ blue ribbon event, it was an uphill battle for Suva Grammar School’s Paula Vonolagi, who claimed gold after being closely challenged by athletes from Nabua Secondary School and Marist Brothers High School.
In the senior girls’ event, Lomary Secondary School’s Lusiane Lewasewa caused an upset, coming from behind to take gold.
Suva Grammar School dominated the intermediate grade 100 metres, with Hepzibah Tuimanono and Jolame Suguturaga each securing gold in their respective races.
Tuimanono was closely followed by Saint Joseph’s Secondary School in second place, while Grammar also claimed bronze.
Suguturaga finished ahead of Marist Brothers High School, which had to settle for silver and bronze.
Marist’s Kirikiti Biu was the standout in the junior boys’ 100 metres, cruising to victory.
In the junior girls’ 100 metres, Kinisimere Ralesi delivered gold for Grammar, with Lomary Secondary School taking silver.
Saint Joseph’s Secondary School’s Mereoni Matanitobua dominated the sub-junior girls’ 100 metres, while Grammar’s Ezekiel Tabualevu claimed gold in the boys’ race.
Cheers erupted from the stands as supporters from Waimanu Road celebrated their athlete’s performance.
Yat Sen Secondary School secured silver in the girls’ race, while Grammar took bronze.
Tabualevu delivered a commanding performance, finishing well ahead of his closest rivals.
The competition concludes tomorrow.
