Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reassured the public that there is no need for panic buying or price increases, despite growing global concerns.
Speaking after the cabinet meeting today, Rabuka says Fiji currently has sufficient stock in the country for at least three months, with further shipments already scheduled.
Rabuka emphasises that there is no justification for any price hike, adding that the government has been assured of stable supply levels and incoming stock.
He also urges the public to remain calm, stressing that panic buying is unnecessary given the country’s current supply situation.
The Prime Minister confirms that the government has contingency plans in place, which will be rolled out in stages if the situation escalates, particularly in relation to developments in the Middle East.
He adds that fuel supply was also discussed with industry stakeholders, noting that any potential impacts will be managed under the government’s response plans.
Additional shipments are already en route and scheduled, which will extend overall fuel availability to up to 90 days.
To strengthen preparedness, Cabinet has approved the establishment of a Fuel Advisory Committee.
The Committee will monitor fuel supply levels, coordinate between Government and industry, and advise on any necessary measures should global conditions change.
Work is also underway to finalise Emergency Fuel Response regulations to support timely action if required.
The Government says these steps are precautionary and part of Government’s broader preparedness planning, and they do not indicate a fuel shortage.
The Government is urging members of the public to continue purchasing fuel as normal and avoid unnecessary stockpiling.
Panic buying can place pressure on supply systems and may lead to temporary shortages at service stations.
The public is also reminded that storing fuel at home can pose serious safety and fire risks.
Members of the public can help by purchasing fuel only as needed for daily use, avoiding hoarding or bulk storage, following official Government updates for accurate information, by remaining calm and acting responsibly, Fijians can help ensure that essential services, including hospitals, electricity, water supply and emergency response teams continue to receive the fuel they need to serve the nation.
The Government will continue to monitor the situation closely and will keep the public informed of any developments.
