The Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s team has finished sixth in the Sydney 7s and has dropped to fifth place in the World 7s Series standings after losing to New Zealand 31‑7 in the fifth place play‑off last night.
It was a dismal performance by Fiji and our only try was scored by Eroni Sau while New Zealand scored five tries.
The All Blacks 7s were leading 26‑nil in the first half before Tim Mickkelson sealed the game with a 60‑metre try.
New Zealand’s other tries was scored by Caleb Clarke, Sione Molia, Vilimoni Koroi and Reagan Ware.
Meanwhile, Apete Daveta has suffered an ankle injury and has been replaced by Vasikali Mudu.
The national side will now travel to New Zealand for the Hamilton 7s this weekend.
Australia won the Sydney 7s after thrashing South Africa 29‑0 in front of their home crowd.
It was an emotional win for veteran James Stannard who was playing his last game in Sydney this season.
Australia dominated throughout as they showed a different performance compared to their 9th place finish in Cape Town last month.
Australia’s Captain Lewis Holland led by example as he scored the first try followed by Stannard as they led South Africa 14‑0 at halftime.
Australia continued their dominance and took their chances in the second half as they scored three more tries.
It has been 16 years since Australia won a tournament on their home soil.
Australia also won the women’s final beating NZ 31-0.
Looking at the other results, Canada beat Scotland 14‑12 to win the 13th place play‑off, France beat Wales 29‑12 to win the Challenge Trophy Final while Argentina beat USA 31‑10 to finish in third place.
Looking at the World Sevens Series points table, South Africa has taken the lead with 58 points, New Zealand is in second place with 54 points, Australia has moved up to third place with 43 points, Argentina is in fourth place with 41 points while the Fiji Airways Men’s National 7s team has dropped to fifth place with 40 points.
