The Fiji Football Association will honor the soccer legends of 1977 who played and won against Australia.
Fiji FA’s Chief Executive officer Mohammed Yusuf says these players will be special guests during the semi‑finals and finals of the Courts IDC in Lautoka.
Some of the former players who were part of the Fiji soccer side that beat Australia include George Koi, Jimmy Okete, Vula Wate, Anand Sami of Labasa, Late Joasaia Tubuna, Hussein Saheb, John Grey, Mun Lal and John Monday.
It was a wet Sunday afternoon on 19th March, 1977 where the Fiji soccer team and Australia played a friendly at the old Buckhurst Park in Suva.
It was going to be a stroll in the park for the Aussies as Fijians had hardly seen success against Australian club teams.
Striker, Jimmy Okete stunned all after outpacing the Aussies and scoring the winning goal for Fiji.
The match was held for five minutes as police had to clear the field as the Fijian fans were seeing the unbelievable unfolding in front of them. The match finished with a victory to Fiji.
Fiji again defeated Australia 1‑0 in 1988.
Meanwhile, the Vodafone Fiji Soccer team will play Indonesia at 9pm this Saturday in Jakarta in an International Friendly.
