Fiji football legend Henry Dyer passes away

Fiji football legend Henry Dyer passes away
Former Fiji football representative and Fiji FA Legends Club inductee Henry Dyer has passed away at the age of 63.

Born and raised in Namoli, Lautoka, Dyer attended Drasa Avenue Primary School, formerly known as Lautoka European School, where his football journey first began.

Playing barefoot with boys in the neighbourhood using shared footballs, Dyer quickly developed a passion and natural talent for the sport while representing his school in district competitions.

As a youngster, he also showed immense promise in rugby and represented various Namoli rugby teams as well as the Lautoka Colts side as a half-back during his teenage years.

However, it was football where his true talent shone brightest.

Dyer later attended Ba Provincial School where he represented the school soccer team from Form Three through to Form Six, helping the school defeat some of the strongest football schools in the country including Tilak High School, Natabua High School and Lautoka Muslim College.

In 1978, Dyer represented the Lautoka Secondary Schools team which defeated Nadi in the Secondary Schools Inter-District Championship final.

He scored in the final, a performance that caught the attention of football officials and marked the beginning of his rise in Fiji football.

After completing school, Dyer joined Airport Soccer Club in Nadi in 1981 under the guidance of Bobby Tikaram and quickly established himself as one of the country’s top midfielders.

His performances helped Nadi reach the 1982 IDC final against Ba at Prince Charles Park.

Fiji FA says his impressive form earned him selection into the Fiji national team under legendary German coach Rudi Gutendorf.

Dyer became part of one of Fiji’s strongest football teams and represented the country at the 1983 South Pacific Games in Samoa where Fiji reached the final after dominant victories over Solomon Islands, Papua New Guinea and New Caledonia.

Known for his strength, fearless style of play and leadership qualities, Dyer earned great respect throughout the football fraternity.

In 1985, he was part of the Fiji side that created history by defeating English club Newcastle United 3-0 in an international friendly, one of the proudest achievements in Fiji football history.

Dyer later represented Lautoka for several seasons before returning to Nadi in 1988 where he continued playing until his retirement in the early 1990s.

In recognition of his immense contribution and dedication towards football, Dyer was inducted into the Fiji Football Association Legends Club in 2020 alongside several former football greats.

Fiji FA president Rajesh Patel says Dyer’s contribution to football in Fiji would never be forgotten.

He says Dyer was not only an outstanding footballer but also a humble and respected individual who gave so much to the development of football in our country.

Patel says his passion, commitment and achievements inspired many young footballers and helped shape Fiji football during one of its memorable eras.

While giving their condolences to the Dyer family, relatives and loved ones during this very difficult time, Patel says his legacy will forever remain part of Fiji football history and the football fraternity will always remember the impact he made both on and off the field.

Patel adds that Fiji FA Legends Club chairman Abdul Mannan and former national representative Jone Ratu would liaise with Dyer’s family regarding funeral assistance and support during this difficult period.
