Works on the temporary bypass road at Semo Village along the Queen's Highway are now in their final stages, with the route expected to open to the public soon.
The urgent construction was undertaken to ensure the continued safety and accessibility of one of Fiji’s main transport corridors.
The project, led by the Fiji Roads Authority (FRA) and contractors, aims to provide a safe and reliable alternative route for families, commuters, and businesses who rely daily on the Queen's Highway.
The highway is a critical link connecting communities and supporting economic activity, making timely intervention essential.
Semo Village Headman, Emosi Lalai expressed his heartfelt gratitude to the FRA team and the Government for their swift response and dedication to completing the bypass.
Lalai says since day one, the FRA team has been availing themselves, working tirelessly to complete the bypass road.
He added that the visible presence and hard work of the FRA personnel on the ground had reassured villagers that their concerns were being taken seriously.
The Headman says their timely response shows their commitment to ensuring their safety and restoring normalcy for the people of Semo and those travelling along the highway.
He says they truly appreciate the effort and long hours the team has put in to make this possible, also acknowledging the collective effort of the community, noting that villagers have stepped in to assist members of the public at designated drop-off and pick-up areas during the construction period.
Lalai says the villagers of Semo are also here assisting the public at the drop-off and pick-up area, and it has been a united effort to make sure everyone is safe, and traffic continues to move as smoothly as possible.
With construction nearing completion, authorities are urging drivers to continue exercising caution when travelling through the area and to adhere to all traffic advisories until the bypass is officially opened.
The government has reiterated that the safety and well-being of the public remains its highest priority.
They say the immediate attention given by the Fiji Roads Authority team to address the situation in Semo reflects the government’s strong commitment to public safety and its proactive approach in responding to infrastructure challenges.
