A yacht offshore from Saweni Beach Road that caught fire this morning was successfully extinguished by the Lautoka Fire Brigade.
NFA says crews were dispatched at 9am following a report of the incident and brought the blaze under control through a coordinated offshore operation.
NFA says upon arrival, firefighters observed significant smoke emissions from the vessel, and due to its offshore location, a portable pump was requested to establish a water supply.
They say working with the assistance of a civilian boat, the fire crew accessed the yacht, deployed a hose line, and drew seawater to combat and ultimately extinguish the blaze.
NFA stresses that the yacht is owned by Kim of Pacific Coast Investment and is reported to be insured, adding the owner was not present at the scene.
They say initial assessments estimate approximately 60 percent damage to the vessel.
NFA says the total cost of the damages is yet to be determined.
Officers from the Fiji Police Force were also in attendance.
NFA emphasizes that the team acted with exceptional speed and professionalism, adding that fighting fires on the water presents unique logistical challenges.
NFA urges all boat owners to ensure their fire safety equipment is not only present but regularly serviced, easily accessible, and that all crew members know how to use it, stressing that early detection is key, and a working smoke alarm can make the difference between a small incident and a total loss.
NFA confirms investigations are currently underway.
