Lateef convicted for possession of meth and marijuana

Former Suva lawyer, Shazran Abdul Lateef has been convicted for the unlawful possession of 9.5 grams of methamphetamine and 3.5 grams of marijuana on 9th May 2019.

Magistrate Shageeth Somaratne has found Lateef guilty of two counts of unlawful possession of illicit drugs in Suva.

State witness in the matter, Asenaca Balekatuba told the court that Lateef requested to meet her, and upon going to a hotel room, Lateef opened a briefcase which contained methamphetamine.

She says that after a few minutes, police officers entered the room, searched it, and seized the drugs.

Magistrate Somaratne says according to the evidence and witness statements, he was satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that Lateef was in possession of unlawful drugs.

Lateef has 28 days to appeal.

He will appear on Friday for his sentencing hearing.
