The Great Council of Chiefs has outlined a number of proposed amendments to the 2013 Constitution and areas for consideration, including the possible inclusion of the Deed of Cession of 1874 in the Constitution, strengthened protections for iTaukei proprietary rights, and the recognition of customary laws and practices.
While making their submission to the Constitution Review Commission, the GCC also raised proposals relating to broader constitutional provisions, including governance arrangements and existing sections of the Constitution.
The Commission acknowledged the GCC’s participation in the consultation process.

They say the submission will be considered alongside others received from across the country.
Beginning with invitations to national institutions, associations, as well as public, private and civil society bodies, the Commission will soon commence nationwide public consultations.

In accordance with its Terms of Reference, as the Commission embarks on nationwide advocacy and consultation, members of the public are invited to make written and oral submissions.
The consultations will be held until 30th June 2026.
