GCC makes submission to Constitution Review Commission

The Great Council of Chiefs has outlined a number of proposed amendments to the 2013 Constitution and areas for consideration, including the possible inclusion of the Deed of Cession of 1874 in the Constitution, strengthened protections for iTaukei proprietary rights, and the recognition of customary laws and practices.

While making their submission to the Constitution Review Commission, the GCC also raised proposals relating to broader constitutional provisions, including governance arrangements and existing sections of the Constitution.

The Commission acknowledged the GCC’s participation in the consultation process.

We are in the process of getting the full submission.

They say the submission will be considered alongside others received from across the country.

Beginning with invitations to national institutions, associations, as well as public, private and civil society bodies, the Commission will soon commence nationwide public consultations.

Tasked with undertaking a comprehensive inquiry into the 2013 Constitution by consulting with the people of Fiji, the Commission continues to encourage individuals, communities and organisations to participate in the review process.

The Constitution Review Commission is an independent commission appointed by the President.

The Commission is tasked to undertake a comprehensive inquiry into the 2013 Constitution, consulting with the people of Fiji to ensure the Constitution reflects their values, needs, and aspirations, and to submit our findings and recommendations to the President.

In accordance with its Terms of Reference, as the Commission embarks on nationwide advocacy and consultation, members of the public are invited to make written and oral submissions.

The consultations will be held until 30th June 2026.
