Young Pacific Change Makers Suzanne Turaganiwai

Nominee #1 – Suzanne Turaganiwai

Suzanne Turaganiwai is a Media and Graphics Assistant at the Institute of Applied Sciences, USP, where she assists the Quality, Marketing and Communication team engage in Marketing and Public Relations exercises for the Institute.

With a deep love and respect for the ocean, a passion for the arts and a background in Marine Science, Suzanne has turned to artivism (activism through art) in her free time to highlight the issue of marine plastic pollution in Suva, Fiji.

Her Instagram page, @benu_ni_waitui, documents the various marine debris often littered and washed up along Suva coastlines, the upcycled items that she turns into art pieces and mini clean up sessions carried out with friends. In highlighting the issue of marine debris, Suzanne hopes to shine a brighter light on the issue of plastic pollution in Fiji and inspire more young people to be better stewards of the ocean.

She also hopes to reduce the amount of rubbish going to the landfill by upcycling select items into art that will eventually be sold to generate funds for more coastal clean ups and artivism projects in future.
