A world-renowned heart surgeon, Professor Afksendiyos Kalangos from Europe, supported by top medical professionals from India and pediatric intensive care nurses from Australia are currently offering free, life-saving open heart surgeries for children at the Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital in Suva.

In addition to Professor Kalangos, the team includes Professor Emeritus Dr.Vijayalakshmi Balekundri, an experienced cardiologist with over 30 years of expertise in the field of cardiology.

Hospital Director Dr. Krupali Tappoo expressed deep appreciation to the visiting surgical team for their dedication and expertise in performing these critical surgeries for children born with Congenital Heart Disease.

She says they are incredibly grateful to Professor Kalangos and his team for selflessly dedicating their time to come to Fiji and operate on our children.

Doctor Tappoo says Fiji is truly fortunate to host such a skilled and experienced team of medical professionals.

She says their presence will save the lives of many children who otherwise would not have access to treatment.

Since its official inauguration in April 2022, the Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital has saved the lives of 319 children and performed over 20,000 echocardiograms, all completely free of charge.

The lifesaving work has been made possible through the support of visiting medical teams from across the globe, including the USA, Singapore, Australia, New Zealand, Europe, and India, along with organizations like Health in Kind Australia, Hearts4Kids New Zealand, National University Hospital Singapore, and Sanjeevani Hospitals India.
