The drowning toll currently stands at 38 compared to 29 for the same period last year.

A 23-year-old woman from Vakabuli in Lautoka is believed to have drowned in the Vakabuli River yesterday.

Police say the woman had gone to bathe in the river yesterday morning when the alleged incident occurred.

They say when she failed to return home after some time, a search was conducted where her body was found floating in the river.

A post mortem will be conducted as investigations continue.

The drowning toll currently stands at 38 compared to 29 for the same period last year.

Police say they are urging the public to be vigilant and take necessary safety precautions if they are intending on going for a picnic or will be involved in any water-related activities today.

They add they anticipate a lot of families to be taking advantage of today's public holiday at popular picnic spots and while Police will be moving around they can't be everywhere and are urging everyone to prioritize their safety.
