Woman charged for allegedly unlawfully obtaining money meant for Back to School Education Assistance

A woman has been charged with allegedly unlawfully obtaining money meant for Back to School Education Assistance from a member of the public through the M-PAiSA platform.

The Police M-PAiSA Taskforce has charged Laisani Toni Batirerega with four counts of obtaining financial advantage and one count possession of property suspected to being proceeds of crime.

The alleged incident occurred between 8th and 9th January this year.

The 44-year-old woman from Yavulo, Sigatoka appeared in the Sigatoka Magistrates Court and has been granted bail with two sureties and a bail bond of $2,000.

Batirerega has been ordered by the court to surrender her travel documents at the court registry.

The matter has been adjourned to the 9th of April.

In a separate case, the Police M-PAiSA Taskforce has arrested and charged a 32-year-old taxi driver for allegedly pretending to be a staff of a supermarket in Lautoka, selling groceries from the bulk through the phone and obtaining $700 from members of the public.

The man from Lautoka is charged with one count of obtaining financial advantage through deception.

He will appear in the Lautoka Magistrate’s Court today.
