Weather change sees local copra demand increase

The change in weather patterns and flooding has seen the demand for crude coconut oil increase and this will mean more money for local copra farmers.

Copra Millers of Fiji Board chairman, Ilisoni Taoba said at the moment the price for one tonne of copra is at all time high as the major coconut oil producing countries like the Philippines and Indonesia are being affected by adverse weather conditions.

He added that with the floods, cyclones and even earthquakes in Australia, New Zealand and in North America has affected suppliers of Soya Bean Oil and Sunflower Oil and this has pushed up the demand for coconut oil.

The mill gate price or the buying price currently stands at $1,350 for a tonne of copra and this has seen people slowly bringing in produce.

Meanwhile, in the short term, $1.3 million worth of copra is being brought in from Christmas Islands until local supply stabilizes in June.
