Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama says they will continue to fill the role of Provincial Council Chairpersons with candidates who will act in the interest of the Itaukei people.

While responding to SODELPA MP Anare Jale’s question for reconsideration for the Provincial Councils to appoint their Chairpersons, Bainimarama says they appoint a Chairperson based on their ties to the province, their ability to navigate today’s economic landscape and also their potential to bring transparency and accountability to the communities they preside over.

SODELPA MP Niko Nawaikula then asked the Prime Minister if he can change the law to allow Provincial Councils to select their own chairpersons.

Nawaikula said government was treating Provincial Councils like children and selecting the chairpersons for them.

The Prime Minister told Naiwakula that will not happen.
