The worry now is that doctors will have to do the unethical thing of choosing who to put on ventilators when our health system becomes overwhelmed - Dr Wilson

Director of the Fiji Institute of Pacific Health Research Doctor Donald Wilson.

The Director of the Fiji Institute of Pacific Health Research Doctor Donald Wilson says the worry now is that when our health system becomes overwhelmed and cannot take in any more patients with severe COVID disease, doctors will have to do the unethical thing of needing to choose who to put on ventilators and who not to.

Doctor Wilson highlighted this during the Fiji Law Society’s Virtual Discussion on the topic To Jab or Not to Jab.

He says when the health system reaches this stage, you would not want to be a patient with severe disease.

Doctor Wilson says this is why there is value for vaccination which will protect people from severe disease.

He says there are more benefits than risks to get vaccinated.

Doctor Wilson says there are side effects of the vaccine but it is mostly mild and the severe ones happen to 4 in a million people.

He says that the vaccine trials did not skip any steps because there was already some baseline to the vaccines and countries in the world came together as things needed to be done fast.
