General Secretary, Agni Deo Singh

The Fiji Teachers Union has written to the Ministry of Education demanding answers as to why a number of teachers in the Western Division did not receive their pay last week.

General Secretary, Agni Deo Singh says these teachers were still waiting for their pay yesterday afternoon.

Singh says the headteacher of a Lautoka based school travelled to Suva last Friday to check why his 25 teachers did not receive the pay and upon checking found there was confusion within different departments of the Ministry.

He says they believe it is poor record-keeping on the part of the Ministry that has caused this incident.

We sent questions to the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Education, Anjeela Jokhan yesterday afternoon. She will not comment.

When asked for a response, Minister for Education, Premila Kumar says she is not the operational head of the Ministry and the Permanent Secretary should answer the questions.
