Sweden has booked a semi final showdown against Spain after beating Japan 2-1 in the second FIFA Women’s World Cup quarter final last night.

The Swedish side survived a late surge from Japan and held on in the final moments of the game to claim the win.

Amanda Ilestedt and Filippa Angeldal scored for Sweden in the first spell as the game went into halftime with the Swedish side holding a 2-0 lead.

Japan’s Honoka Hayash scored their only goal in the 87th minute but could not help as Sweden tightened their defence in the last minutes of the game.

With Japan eliminated, there will now be a first-time World Cup winner in 2023.

In other quarter finals matches, Australia will play France at 7pm and England will take on Colombia at 10.30pm.

Both games will be played tonight.
