Sports has always been an integral part of our Fijian culture, embodying our values of teamwork, passion and resilience.

This was highlighted by the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru during the opening of the 2023 Fiji University Games and celebrating International Day of Sports at the USP Gymnasium, Laucala.

Saukuru says they come together to highlight the unifying power of sports to celebrate talented student athletes and to emphasize the value of physical and mental well-being leading a balanced life.

The Minister urges the student athletes to embrace this opportunity, to not only excel in their respective sporting disciplines but to also cultivate friendships with students from different universities, and cherish this experience as it will undoubtedly shape their lives and live lasting memories.

He further says by engaging in sports, university students not only enhance their physical fitness but also develop centralized skills such as discipline, leadership and perseverance.

Furthermore, the Minister encouraged all university authorities and student bodies to continue investing in sports infrastructure, creating opportunities for students to engage in a wider range of sporting activities.

Fiji Universities Sports Association President Alifereti Cawanibuka says the Fiji Universities Games is becoming an annual sporting event for all tertiary institutions in Fiji.

He adds that this year is a record seeing a large number of students participating from different institutions.
