Traditional leaders in Rewa have been reminded of their critical role in strengthening governance, unity, and community resilience to support Fiji’s national development aspirations.

While opening the Rewa Provincial Council Meeting at the Centre for Appropriate Technology and Development (CATD) in Nadave, Minister for Rural and Maritime Development Sakiasi Ditoka emphasised the importance of inclusive village development plans that reflect the voices of women, youth, persons with disabilities, and elders.

He says unity within the province is key to realising the Government’s vision of working together in love, wisdom, and stewardship of natural resources.

Ditoka urged chiefs and the people of Rewa to focus on building strong families as the foundation for national progress.

He also thanked the Rewa Provincial Council and traditional leaders, including the Marama Bale na Roko Tui Dreketi Ro Teimumu Vuikaba Kepa and the Turaga na Vunivalu, for their continued support in rural development and disaster risk management.

The Minister outlined Fiji’s key development goals under the National Development Plan 2025–2029 and Vision 2050, noting that 62 percent of Fijians living in poverty are based in rural areas.

He says community-driven planning is essential and highlighted key priorities including the construction of 270 new homes, six jetties, 20 seawall upgrades, and 120 farm access roads over the next two years.

Ditoka confirmed that government investment in the province of Rewa from 2022 to 2025 stands at $104.7 million, with $36.6 million allocated for the current financial year.

He also outlined national budget initiatives to ease the cost of living, such as the reduction of VAT to 12.5 percent, increases in social welfare assistance, and student transport subsidies.

Ditoka noted the passage of the National Disaster Risk Management Act and the formation of a Relocation Unit as major milestones in strengthening Fiji’s disaster preparedness.

Meanwhile, the province officially launched its 2025–2028 Strategic Development Plan during the meeting.
