President Ratu Wiliame Maivalili Katonivere has been farewelled at the State House.

The Republic of the Fiji Military Forces and the Fiji Navy accorded a guard of honour to the President at the State House.

Speaking on behalf of the Government and the Fijian people, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka acknowledged the great work that has been done by Ratu Wiliame and said he has the qualities of a true leader.

Rabuka says in his view, he found Ratu Wiliame as gracious, knowledgeable and a true patriot who has the people and the nation of Fiji at heart.

He says Ratu Wiliame conducted his duties as Head of State with integrity and fortitude.

Speaking for the final time at the State House, Ratu Wiliame says he will answer the call of the Fijian people if the need arises as done by his ancestors in past years, going back to 1874 when Fiji was ceded to Great Britain.

He says he is leaving the State House with a good heart and assures the government of the support of the Macuata people. Present at the farewell ceremony were cabinet ministers, diplomats, RFMF Commander Major-General Ro Jone Kalouniwai, Acting Police Commissioner Juki Fong Chew, and senior government officials.

Parliament Speaker and Tui Cakau Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu will replace Ratu Wiliame as President after getting 37 votes in parliament.

Rabuka nominated Ratu Naiqama, and his nomination was backed by the People’s Alliance Party, National Federation Party, SODELPA and the Opposition Group of 9 Members of Parliament.

Ratu Naiqama is the President-elect and he will remain in office as the Speaker of Parliament until Monday, 11th November.

The new Speaker will be elected in Parliament on 12th November.
