Police officers from the Samabula Police Station will be looking into the issues where people, including some elderly people in wheelchairs have been staying on the streets, begging and drinking alcohol around the Samabula Post Office area.

Police say they will also be working with the Ministry of Social Welfare to help address the issue of beggars.

This comes as concerns have been raised by residents about people seen begging in the area and also hassling others for cigarettes and alcohol.

This is also happening near the Samabula Police Station.

Director of Social Protection, Veremo Muria had earlier told fijivillage News that they are looking into the matter.

He says their profiling work continues and they will be checking if those who have been seen around the Samabula area have already been profiled.

Muria adds they will be investigating to see if these people are on any social protection scheme, have families to go back home to or if they can be re-homed in old age homes.
