A petition signed by 1,500 people calling for a referendum to determine the changing of the national flag was tabled in parliament yesterday and referred to the parliamentary standing committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights.
The petition has been presented by Opposition MP Viliame Gavoka who said that the signatories are people from all walks of life.
Gavoka said these people want the government to have consultations with everyone before any changes are made to the national flag.
Prime Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama has already said that while there has been some criticism from those who would prefer the British symbols to our own, he wants every Fijian to think very carefully about what symbols they believe best represent our nation now and that will also resonate with future generations of Fijians in the decades and centuries ahead.
