There is nothing glamorous about life in Prison.
Assistant Superintendent of Corrections, Isireli Dausiga highlighted this to students of Kalabu High School and William Cross High School during their visits.
This visit by Fiji Corrections Service staff is focused on schools around red zone areas which are marked by the Fiji Police Force as crime prone areas.
ASC Dausiga told the students that prison is a waste of time, and once they enter prison, life gets harder even after they come out.
Hesays the Corrections Service actively conducts awareness programs in schools to educate students about the various aspects of their work.
Dausiga, who is also a mentor to troubled high school students, shared that there are often certain types of behavior with teenagers who often end up in prison.
He says first of all, ill-discipline, the lack of respect for elders, a lot of self-pride and the inability to listen are often the key behaviors of those who will make a wrong decision.
ASC Dausiga also reminded them, that school can also be a liberator from bad situations.
William Cross School Principal Sunia Ragede thanked the Corrections Service for the initiative, saying such pro-active exercises was necessary for the school as they sit in the middle of a red zone.
Ragede says children at this school come from neighbourhoods where they see crime every day, so they need to be constantly reminded to stay in the education system.
He says getting people from FCS to talk to them really drives the message home about the risks of prison life.
