Students in Taveuni call for corporal punishment to be considered

Students from Bucalevu Secondary School and Holy Cross College in Taveuni shared their views, proposing that corporal punishment be considered within the Constitution, provided that clear guidelines, limitations and safeguards are established.

The consultation formed part of the Constitutional Review Commission's ongoing engagement with students and young people to gather views on Fiji's constitutional future and governance framework.

The students voiced concerns about what they perceive as increasingly disrespectful behaviour among some children and students, and stressed the need for stronger disciplinary measures to encourage respect, accountability and positive conduct both at home and in schools.

Students also recommended reviewing the current voting age, suggesting that it be increased from 18 to 21 years.

They argued that many 18-year-olds are still developing emotionally and mentally and may be more vulnerable to external influences when making significant national decisions.

The views shared during the consultation underscore the importance of including young people in national conversations that help shape Fiji's future.
