Despite the challenges faced throughout the academic year last year, Nilsen College in Vatukoula recorded a 100% pass rate in the Fiji Year 13 Examination for the 2023 academic year.

According to the school, it is the only high school in Vatukoula that caters for children of miners and those who were rejected from other schools in the Tavua to Ba district.

The school says this achievement was possible through the sacrifices that the students and the teachers made.

They say teachers conducted morning studies from 7am-8am and extra classes from 3-4pm and there were also night classes from 6pm to 10pm as students would camp and teachers would be working hand in hand to do all they could.

They add one of the challenges faced was trying to contain students in staying in school as the resources were limited including the network issues and the attendance in class as most students stayed with their relatives and could not recharge for data.

The school says the attendance in the class used to be 3/36 which was terrible but the teachers went out of their way to visit every student in their respective homes to check on all of them.

They further say that the school also went through a lot in losing some teachers but has gained some as well.

The school further says they are grateful to the supportive management, parents, stakeholders and teachers for helping the students in achieving their best.
