People living in remote rural areas can now access services like women empowerment, access to legal and social services, and awareness on citizens’ rights preserved in the constitution.
This was made possible through the commissioning of three Rights, Empowerment and Cohesion (REACH) buses today through the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation, Legal Aid Commission, UNDP and the Japanese government.
Minister for Women Children and Poverty Alleviation Mereseini Vuniwaqa says when people could not come to them, they decided to take their services to the people.
She says now they have a strong platform to boost government’s service delivery.
Meanwhile UNDP’s resident representative Osnat Lubrani says this also re-enforces and demonstrates Fiji’s commitment to the implementation of the sustainable development goal agenda which pledges to leave no one behind.
She says the REACH project also supports rural pregnant mothers, providing protection support for children and social pension scheme for older people.
3,138 people have benefitted from the REACH mobile awareness program.
The REACH project started from 2015 and will go till 2018 with a total funding of US$2.685m form the Japanese government and UNDP.
