Villagers of Laucala in Rewa are celebrating the opening of their newly refurbished village hall, which is now set to serve as a community hub, dispensary, and evacuation centre.
The project was officially commissioned by the Minister for Health and Medical Services, Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu, who also launched a critical water project in the area.
Dr Lalabalavu says the hall represents the power of unity and what can be achieved when a community works together.
He says the hall is a sanctuary for the community and in times of crisis, it will provide a safe haven for our families, offering shelter and support when it matters most.
He also thanked the Turaga-ni- Koro, community health workers, and the district nurse from Naililili Nursing Station for their tireless commitment in helping bring the project to life.
Dr Lalabalavu says the renovations address immediate community needs and also build climate resilience.
The Ministry says upgrades included the replacement of old, rusted roofing and the installation of new guttering to improve rainwater harvesting.
The total cost of the project was approximately USD$12,000, funded by the World Health Organization.
