Investigators are awaiting medical clearance of the mother of the newborn baby who was found abandoned in a hostel washroom in Lautoka earlier this week before they begin questioning her.

Police have confirmed to fijivillage News that the mother has been identified, and investigators are standing by for clearance from medical authorities.

She says the case is being handled by officers from the Criminal Investigations Department in Lautoka.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro had earlier confirmed that the mother, who is a tertiary student, and her baby are now under the care of health authorities.

The Minister had also directed the Ministry of Education officials to ensure counseling is made available to the young mother.

Meanwhile, as the Fiji Police Force investigates the incident, welfare officers from the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection are working closely with the Police and health authorities to ensure the baby receives the care and protection needed.
