In response to recent attacks on Hindu temples, a peaceful gathering titled “Hindu Unity” is being organised to bring together members of the Hindu community across Fiji.
While speaking to fijivillage News, active community worker and Vice-President of the Fiji China Business Council and Sandeep Singh expressed deep disappointment at the low turnout during the immersion ceremony of statues from the Shiv Temple, which was vandalised in a recent attack.
He says that the temple has served thousands of devotees, yet fewer than 50 people turned up to pay their respects when the statues were being immersed.
Singh adds that it was a painful moment that made him realise how urgently we need to unite as Hindus.
The event will be held on 9th August at the FMF Gymnasium, and aims to strengthen unity, promote religious awareness, and encourage youth participation in preserving and protecting Hinduism.
The Hindu Unity event is supported by over 20 organisations, including Vishwa Sanatan Sanstha of Fiji, Vishva Hindu Parishad, Lakshmi Narayan Temple, Hanuman Chalisa Pariwar, Hare Krishna Society, and others.
It will feature continuous chanting of hymns, devotional music, cultural performances coordinated by the Indian Cultural Centre, and participation from Ramayan Mandalis and the Hare Krishna Society.
Singh says this is not about one group - it’s about all who believe in Hinduism standing together.
He says if we don't unite now, we risk losing our religious values and voice.
Organisers are also calling for stricter laws and punishment for acts of desecration and vandalism against places of worship.
Singh says the gathering is open and free to all and is encouraging families to attend in large numbers.
He says free transport such as bus services will be provided to all attendees.
