Fijians with Nepalese heritage from all over the country have come together today to celebrate Nepal Republic Day on a large scale for the first time in Kavanagasau, Sigatoka today.

While speaking to fijivillage News during the celebrations at his residence, Sunjay Kumar Dharti says they first had planned a celebration in 2020 but had to cancel it for the next couple of years due to COVID but this year, a lot of Fijians with Nepalese heritage have come together.

Dharti says people from Nepal first came to Fiji during Girmit when they crossed the border, changed their name and lied about being Indian.

He says they worked in Fiji and after their indentured period, they decided to stay back in Fiji.

Dharti says they have kept the Nepalese culture and traditions alive till today.

He adds they intend to celebrate Nepal Day on a bigger scale in the future.
