Cape Town 7s: Captain Courageous Jerry Matana to lead by example

Cape Town 7s: Captain Courageous Jerry Matana to lead by example

Fiji Airways Fiji Men’s 7s Captain Jeremaia Matana will be a player that other teams will need to look out for in the HSBC Cape Town 7s this weekend after leading his team to a resounding win in the Dubai last week.

Matana led by example in all facets of the game and was perhaps Fiji’s most relentless and effective defender throughout the two-day tournament.

In defence, the 26-year-old was wrestling and chopping down some of the game’s finest athletes all weekend.

In attack, Matana was breaking lines with his strength, and utilising his speed to score some fine tries.

He was also where he was when needed in support, which just goes to show the workload he has been carrying for his team and leading by example, as expected from every Captain.

Fiji is in Pool A alongside Uruguay and Great Britain.

They will play Uruguay at 12.38am Sunday before taking Great Britain at 4.38am Sunday in their second pool match. The Men’s Cup semi finals start at 11.56pm Sunday, with the cup final at 5.11am Monday. Meanwhile, the Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s play both their games on Saturday night, taking on the USA at 7pm before facing Great Britain at 10.16pm.
