Cabinet approves the use of speed cameras but with certain exemptions
Speed cameras are now up in different parts of the country as cabinet has approved the Land Transport Amendment Decree and the LTA Photographic Detection Device Regulations 2013 which came into effect from yesterday.

But there are exemptions for a group of vehicles and people.

General manager operations Land Transport Authority Joseva Vosanibola said a speed camera can detect speeding and drivers running the red light which can curb a lot of accidents.

Vosanibola said since these are running offences, the offences detected by a speed camera will be on an owner onus basis meaning the vehicle owner will be held liable.

However, Vosanibola said the decree exempts any motor vehicle used by a fire brigade, National Ambulance Service, Fiji Police Force, the President of Fiji including his or her motorcade and support vehicles, and any vehicle used by a Cabinet Minister including their motorcade and support vehicles.

Fijivillage asked Vosanibola why the Fiji Police Force, President and Cabinet Ministers are exempt under the decree.

He added these cameras have been placed in black spots around the country.

When contacted for clarification on the use of the new speed cameras and the exemption, Works Minister Timoci Natuva referred all queries to LTA.
