Former Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum

The case of former Attorney General, Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, where he is facing a charge of one count of abuse of office, is expected to be called today before Magistrate Jeremaia Savou.

According to information received by fijivillage News, Sayed-Khaiyum is yet to return to the country.

Sayed-Khaiyum was allowed to travel to Singapore on medical grounds in mid September however Magistrate Savou had said Sayed-Khaiyum's passport must be returned to the Suva Magistrates Court Criminal Registry by yesterday.

The stop departure order issued of 2nd May this year was also uplifted temporarily and was to be reinstated yesterday.

While delivering his ruling last month, Magistrate Jeremaia Savou said there are sufficient reasons for Sayed-Khaiyum to return, and those are family, business and financial reasons.

Sayed-Khaiyum had applied to travel to Singapore for his medical review, which has been delayed since 2022 due to work commitments.

Looking at the charge faced in court - it is alleged that Sayed-Khaiyum between June 30th and July 12th last year, while being the Acting Prime Minister, signed a Deed of Variation and Addendum between the Government and the then Supervisor of Elections, Mohammed Saneem.

It is alleged the approval for the government to pay the taxes of Saneem was done without the proper approval of the Constitutional Offices Commission and the President.
