7s players bring strong competition to Fijiana XVs squad - Cunningham

Coach Ioan Cunningham

The inclusion of the four Fiji Airways Fijiana 7s players in the Vodafone Fijiana XVs squad has added a lot of competition amongst the players as they compete for spots in the match day 23 squad to play the USA Women this weekend.

The four players are Ilisapeci Delaiwau, Mere Vocevoce, Kelerayani Luvu and Verenaisi Ditavutu.

Coach Ioan Cunningham says it has been great to have these 7s players in the team, and they have really adapted well to the 15s environment.

Cunningham says these four players bring great intensity to training.

When talking about selections, Cunningham says it is always difficult when they, as coaches, have to make decisions on players, but they aim to give as many players as possible game time and give players opportunities for selection before the coaches select their final 32-member squad for the Rugby World Cup.

He says the team had great exposure to a group that played in the Oceania tournament, and now the coaches are looking at the 7s players coming into the 15s programme.

He adds that as coaches, they welcome selection headaches, and that is exactly what the players are giving them.

The Fijiana XVs will take on the USA Women at 6.05am this Sunday in Washington, D.C.
