Seventy-three families and 312 people are taking shelter at six evacuation centres that have been activated in the Western Division.

While speaking in a press conference this afternoon, Minister for Disaster Risk Management Sakiasi Ditoka says 183 people are taking shelter at Andrew’s Primary School, 33 people at the Saoni Methodist Church, 14 at Korovuto College, 7 at the VOU Dance Group Office, 69 at Nalele Community Hall, while 9 are at Tavua District Primary School.

Ditoka says the safe evacuation of these families was done with the support of the Fiji Police Force, who have tirelessly assisted them in evacuation and the provision of security to the evacuees.

He says they have started the procurement of food rations for those families in evacuation centres, and they will continue to send out relief items as and when the need arises.

The Minister adds officials from the Health Ministry are currently visiting the active evacuation centres and the affected communities, particularly in Nadi, to conduct public health awareness and attend to health cases as and when required.
