2,082 people were booked by Police for speeding from the 1st of this month to the 24th.

Police say speeding increases the severity of injury and death.

They say this is a known fact, but speeding continues to top the number of traffic bookings daily.

They are urging drivers to please slow down, and when you drive over the speed limit, you put yourself and everyone on the road in danger.

Meanwhile, there were a few accidents that occurred over the past few days where a 10-year-old girl, was allegedly hit by a vehicle driven by a 23-year-old man along the Princes Road in Tamavua.

A 57-year-old driver was rushed to the Nausori Health Centre after the truck he was driving veered off the road and landed upside down near a river.

In the Western Division, an elderly woman, who was a passenger in a vehicle driven by her 32-year-old son, received injuries after it veered off Kings Road near Tuvu in Lautoka and landed in a drain.

Director of Traffic, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mitieli Divuan stresses the need for drivers to be aware of the need to drive within the speed limit.

The current road death toll stands at 20 compared to 39 for the same period last year, and the majority of the cases are linked to speeding.

SSP Divuana says drivers need to adopt a change of mindset and practice safe driving at all times.
