11 people were arrested in Savusavu Town last week for drinking in public places, which resulted in disturbances and the use of abusive language.

While responding to our questions, Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations, Livai Driu says they are addressing these complaints seriously and will monitor nightclubs operating hours and liquor sales.

The Savusavu Town Council is urging the government and authorities to review laws governing public drinking to address the growing concerns.

Council Chair Shiu Sharma has informed fijivillage News that stricter laws and penalties for public drinking would help curb the problem.

Sharma says they are working closely with police to tackle the issue.

He says there is an alarming increase in drunkards and people openly doing drugs within the town, with syringes found in public areas.

The Chair further says that there is a need for collective action and is calling on stakeholders beyond the police and council to take responsibility in minimising these issues.
